Imagine the pain and suffering that goes undiscovered at Petco stores and in its suppliers\u2019 mills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Petco treats the sentient beings it sells as disposable merchandise, but the buck can stop with us, the consumers. For all these \ud83d\udc47 animals\u2019 sakes, please don&#8217;t buy into the pain that Petco peddles.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much Does a Bird at Petco Cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the cost of buying a bird at Petco may be that animal\u2019s very life. We\u2019ve been pushing Petco to end live-animal sales since the early 2000s, when we first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/petco-goes-public-peta-buys-stock\/\">owned stock<\/a> in the company, which saw it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/about-peta\/victories\/peta-end-campaign-petco-company-ends-sale-large-birds\/\">end the sale of <em>large<\/em> birds<\/a> in its stores and recommend and promote flight cages for all birds. But the big-box pet store hasn\u2019t actually listened to the countless people who have begged it to stop exploiting <em>all<\/em> animals, including small birds, like these finches whom a PETA investigator observed while undercover at Sun Pet Ltd., an Atlanta-based wholesale animal dealer that supplies animals to numerous Petco stores:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/peta-investigation-of-sun-pet-04.jpg\" alt=\"petco animals birds\" class=\"wp-image-912087\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/peta-investigation-of-sun-pet-04.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/peta-investigation-of-sun-pet-04-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/peta-investigation-of-sun-pet-04-400x533.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Feather loss\u2014as seen in these finches\u2014frequently occurs when birds peck at one another, a sign of stress, which is often the result of severe crowding and continuous confinement.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Video footage and photos captured by PETA\u2019s investigator revealed how thousands of birds and other small animals at Sun Pet Ltd.\u2019s enormous warehouses experienced widespread suffering, including incidents in which a worker violently killed hamsters and a supervisor abusively handled hundreds of other animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or consider this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/parrot-rescued-petco-store\/\">white-capped pionus<\/a>, a species of parrot. A concerned good Samaritan noticed that the bird\u2014whose price tag read 50% off $799\u2014had apparently spent <em>14 months<\/em> in a cage at his local Petco store, waiting to be purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"314\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/1715.20111227_5F00_104338.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/1715.20111227_5F00_104338.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/1715.20111227_5F00_104338-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> With PETA\u2019s help, this good Samaritan adopted this white-capped pionus, whom he affectionately named Tegan, after she\u2019d apparently spent more than a year in a cage at a Petco store.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Colorado Department of Agriculture\u2019s (CDA) 2019 inspections, a \u201clarge amount of feces\u201d was found in a parakeet cage at the Northglenn store.&nbsp;Several stores lacked essential documentation, including one that was without a certificate for conures (parrots) whom it had evidently held for<em>&nbsp;more than a year<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even when they\u2019re not heinously abused, birds sold and kept as \u201cpets\u201d are denied the opportunity to satisfy one of their most natural instincts\u2014to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Petco Still Sell Fish?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although PETA has repeatedly exposed cruelty to betta fish in Petco\u2019s supply chain and at its stores, the company is still selling these animals in tiny containers, causing <em>hundreds of thousands<\/em> to suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petco stores\u2019 own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/reviews-petco-betta-fish\/\">Yelp reviews<\/a> are proof of just how miserable it is to be a betta fish on a store shelf: \u201cThey had multiple dead Betta Fish, with one of them having fungus growing on [them],\u201d one reviewer in California commented. \u201cI counted at least 10 dead bettas just molding in the jars,\u201d Megan from Washington wrote after visiting another of the chain\u2019s stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"301\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Petco-Collage-1-602x301.jpg\" alt=\"petco animals betta fish\" class=\"wp-image-912065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Petco-Collage-1-602x301.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Petco-Collage-1-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Petco-Collage-1-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Petco-Collage-1-637x320.jpg 637w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Petco-Collage-1.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> \u201cThis betta fish was suffering from fin rot,\u201d this Petco reviewer pointed out. But a store manager was apparently reluctant to help.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8cZ55DHh0Rs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PETA\u2019s investigations<\/a> revealed how betta fish are individually confined to small bags that contain hardly enough water to keep their bodies fully submerged and that are stuffed into boxes for transport. Many fish die before and during shipment to Petco retailers, which can take days. At the stores, they\u2019re placed in tiny plastic cups, which are sometimes stacked directly on top of one another\u2014even though Petco acknowledges on its website that the fish breathe by swimming to the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"The True Cost of Selling Betta Fish: Filth, Sickness, and Death at Petco\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/micax_qirsA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The way Petco displays and sells bettas and other fish perpetuates harmful myths about the care of these complex animals. Minuscule plastic cups are <em>never <\/em>suitable containers for fish, who require gallons of filtrated, temperature-regulated water as well as enrichment and mental stimulation\u2014all of which are denied to them when they\u2019re kept in cups barely larger than their bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-large-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-petablue-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/petco-betta-fish\/#takeaction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Join PETA\u2019s Campaign\u2014Urge Petco to Stop Selling Bettas!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Snakes for Sale at Petco?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In their natural habitat, snakes warm themselves in the sun, cool off by burrowing underground, climb trees, and swim gracefully. Experts say it\u2019s essential to snakes\u2019 health and well-being to be able to stretch out to their full length, at a minimum. They also need exercise and room to move\u2014one python who had been fitted with a tracking device traveled 22 miles in 75 days. The animal lay motionless for at least two days before finally dying. Two other stores in the state also deprived reptiles of adequate heat and ultraviolet lighting. Also in Northglenn, iguanas, chameleons, and bearded dragons\u2014who require basking temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s\u2014were in tanks as cold as 72 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/petco-whistleblower-im-tired-seeing-animals-sick-dying\/\">Petco employee-turned-whistleblower contacted PETA<\/a> when they felt compelled to report how animals were suffering and dying at the Texas store where they worked. According to the whistleblower, in just one week, two iguanas and a chameleon died from respiratory tract infections. For a month, management apparently refused to buy fresh vegetables for iguanas and tortoises. The whistleblower also told us about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/python-602x339.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a python<\/a> who apparently died at the store. The same evening of the whistleblower\u2019s initial report, we sent our concerns to a Petco vice president, and the company sent a district manager out to visit the store. The manager did <em>not<\/em> identify all the issues that we noted but agreed that there was a need for additional training. Turtles, lizards, and amphibians can carry salmonella bacteria on their skin and shells, and they can be found in the animals\u2019 enclosures. Don\u2019t Do It!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Small Animals Does Petco Sell?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve fielded too many calls to count from folks who have visited their local Petco store and were flabbergasted by the filth or neglect affecting the mice, rats, guinea pigs, and other small animals being housed in cages. A CDA inspector even noted that a ferret was suffering from a painful prolapsed rectum and a suspected upper respiratory infection, but the animal wasn\u2019t provided with any veterinary care and died\u2014reportedly as a manager was finally taking him or her to get treatment. You get the idea.
