And only one other wild-born orphaned cub has been placed at Oswald\u2019s in the last 15 years (she died in 2013, two years after she was placed at this deathtrap).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">103<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s how many bear cubs <em>bred in captivity<\/em> Oswald\u2019s Bear Ranch has acquired since 1996, all of whom were apparently torn from their mothers prematurely for use in photo ops. Of those 103 bears, 90 were acquired from other roadside zoos or breeders, while 13 were actually born at Oswald\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">82%<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the approximate percentage of bears either bred at Oswald\u2019s or acquired from other roadside zoos and exotic animal dealers, between 1992 and 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/taxidermy-bear-cub-betty-602x725.jpeg\" alt=\"Taxidermied black bear cub Betty, who has been posed on a wooden chair in a glass case\" class=\"wp-image-1074286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/taxidermy-bear-cub-betty-602x725.jpeg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/taxidermy-bear-cub-betty-249x300.jpeg 249w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/taxidermy-bear-cub-betty-768x925.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/taxidermy-bear-cub-betty-1275x1536.jpeg 1275w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/taxidermy-bear-cub-betty-1701x2048.jpeg 1701w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/taxidermy-bear-cub-betty-150x181.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> This cub named Betty died in 2013, within two weeks of arriving at Oswald\u2019s from a roadside zoo in Arizona. Her corpse, which underwent taxidermy, is grotesquely on display in Oswald\u2019s gift shop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">7+<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>At least six bears at the ranch have been slaughtered and another was killed for being too \u201cmean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/oswalds-bear-ranch-3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/oswalds-bear-ranch-3.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">9<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Nine bears have apparently been illegally transferred from Oswald\u2019s. Three of them were wild-born, government-placed bears from Michigan and Minnesota shipped by Oswald\u2019s to a breeding facility in Arizona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/oswalds-bear-ranch-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/oswalds-bear-ranch-1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">17<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s how many cubs age 2 and under who have apparently died suddenly at Oswald\u2019s. Of the 69 bears believed to have died at the ranch, 42 of them have known ages\u2014and none of those lived past the age of 25. (Bears can live into their 30s.) <strong>These don\u2019t include two slaughtered bears whose ages weren\u2019t noted but who were almost certainly killed prematurely.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Causes of death for bears at the ranch have included becoming trapped in a collapsed den and suffering a \u201cdrug overdose.\u201d Others have been slaughtered or have died suddenly of unknown or undisclosed causes. In April 2019, a juvenile bear named Sophie was shot dead after escaping from an enclosure at Oswald\u2019s. Before she was killed, she\u2014along with her cagemates Ashley and Sassy\u2014was captured on video pacing and crying out while confined to a concrete-floored enclosure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Cubs Confined to Concrete Enclosure Search for an Escape\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ouTVOC8wXE4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">*****<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On its website, Oswald\u2019s Bear Ranch misleadingly portrays its <strong>U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/strong> (USDA) status as \u201cA+,\u201d when in fact, the facility has been cited by the USDA multiple times, including for the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using physical abuse (striking a bear cub twice during guest photo ops)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letting young children hand-feed the bears, posing an unnecessary risk of injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allowing a guest to be scratched by a bear cub, resulting in an infected wound (According to state records, the visitor had to go to the hospital.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeding restaurant scraps too high in fat to the bears, some of whom appeared overweight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confining bears to a nonsecure enclosure, which allowed at least two to escape, one of whom (Sophie) was <strong>shot and killed<\/strong> when she was found days later (Then Oswald\u2019s lied about the circumstances surrounding her death and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2021-12-06-usda-consent-decision-order-oswalds-bear-ranch-2400.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ordered to pay a $2,400 penalty<\/a> to settle an administrative complaint with the USDA over the alleged violations.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The USDA isn\u2019t the only agency that\u2019s called Oswald\u2019s out for being dangerous and cruel. The <strong>Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Administration<\/strong> concluded that the facility\u2019s employees are placed at risk of death or serious injury because the roadside zoo allows direct contact between inherently dangerous adult bears and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, Oswald\u2019s misled lawmakers to believe that it regularly received cubs from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), but the agency hadn\u2019t placed cubs at the facility since 2005, <em>as a matter of policy<\/em>. Bears at Oswald\u2019s have also allegedly been shot with paintball guns in an unregistered experiment to test how long paint would stay on their hair, a practice that MDNR considered \u201charassment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">*****<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">80<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2012, PETA has helped actually rescue 80 bears from dire situations, and that number will keep growing until no bear is forced to perform for cruel photos ops, as those at Oswald\u2019s Bear Ranch are. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/ben-bogey-rescued-bears-swim-play-bob-apples\/\">Ben and Bogey<\/a>, for example, were transferred to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado\u2014a <em>real<\/em> wildlife sanctuary\u2014where they\u2019re able to climb, dig, and run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Rescued Bears Are Thriving One Year Later\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MgKGPsAzcI0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wild Animal Sanctuary and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/real-animal-sanctuary-zoo\/\">legitimate sanctuaries<\/a> like it don\u2019t offer bear photo ops or allow guests to play with cubs\u2014they\u2019re focused on the animals\u2019 well-being, not on making a quick buck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE 51 BEARS CURRENTLY AT OSWALD\u2019S DESERVE BETTER THAN TO SUFFER AT A DEATH TRAP.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Help PETA save more bears from cruelty and neglect!
