California Bans Alligator and Crocodile Skin Sales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re thrilled to announce a huge victory for alligators and crocodiles, thanks to California residents and legislators who just saved a law aimed at protecting them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pixabay-Alligator.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Pixabay-Alligator-602x373.jpg\" alt=\"alligator, free, wild, happy, featured\"\/><\/a>\n<\/figure>\n<p>California technically banned alligator- and crocodile-skin sales back in 1970, but the exotic-skins industry has been fighting the ban ever since to keep it from going into effect. Just this year, these special interests\u2014which included the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries\u2014tried to push through <em>three<\/em> assembly bills, the most recent being Assembly Bill 1561, which would have continued delaying the ban. But PETA, Social Compassion in Legislation, and other groups sent out action alerts to our supporters, blasted tweets, garnered celebrity support, enlisted reptile experts to weigh in, and got animal advocates out in full force to protect this vital legislation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2014and the animals\u2014won! California&#8217;s long-awaited ban will go into effect on January 1, 2020. Thank you to everyone who made this historic victory happen!<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/chanel-bans-fur-and-exotic-skins-crocodile-features.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/chanel-bans-fur-and-exotic-skins-crocodile-features-602x401-1552485351.jpg\" alt=\"victory! luxury brand chanel bans fur and exotic skins\"\/><\/a>\n<\/figure>\n<p>PETA expos\u00e9s of the exotic-skins industry have revealed appalling abuse at every turn. On an alligator factory farm in Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.peta.org\/crocodile-alligator-slaughter-hermes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PETA&#8217;s eyewitness<\/a> found that the animals were kept in fetid water in dank, dark sheds. Alligators were still kicking and flailing after workers tried to kill them. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.peta.org\/vietnam-crocodile-skin-farm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PETA expos\u00e9<\/a> revealed that workers electroshocked crocodiles and then attempted to kill them by cutting into their necks and ramming metal rods down their spines while the animals writhed.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Reptiles Killed for Their Skin\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/487892574?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\r\n\t\t\n<p>But there is growing momentum against the use of these animals&#8217; skins. Major designers and retailers\u2014including Arcadia Group (which owns Topshop), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/chanel-bans-fur-exotic-skins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chanel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/about-peta\/victories\/diane-von-furstenberg-drops-angora-fur-exotic-animal-skins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diane von Furstenberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/h-m-pledges-shun-exotic-skins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H&amp;M<\/a>, L Brands (which owns Victoria&#8217;s Secret), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/victory-nike-cole-haan-ban-exotic-skins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nike<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/puma-bans-fur-exotic-skins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PUMA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/bebe-bans-exotic-animal-skins-following-talks-with-peta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bebe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/stella-mccartney-rules-the-runway-with-animal-friendly-spring-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stella McCartney<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/news-releases\/victory-victoria-beckham-bans-exotic-skins-after-peta-u-k-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Victoria Beckham<\/a>\u2014are exotic skin\u2013free.<\/p>\n<p>Tell Herm\u00e8s and Prada that the time for using and abusing these animals is over.
