{"id":896176,"date":"2018-06-11T10:51:38","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T17:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/?p=896176"},"modified":"2022-11-30T01:17:04","modified_gmt":"2022-11-30T09:17:04","slug":"bears-once-used-for-entertainment-enjoy-their-sanctuary-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/bears-once-used-for-entertainment-enjoy-their-sanctuary-homes\/","title":{"rendered":"VIDEOS: These Bears Were Used for Entertainment\u2014Now, They&#8217;re Thriving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PETA has been working hard to help retire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/category\/main-issues\/animals-in-entertainment\/bears\/\">bears used for entertainment<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/real-animal-sanctuary-zoo\/\">reputable sanctuaries<\/a>\u2014and these three new videos show them thriving in their new homes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/bears-freed-from-great-bear-show-to-sanctuary\/\">Five bears once used in the Texas-based traveling act The Great Bear Show arrived at the Keepers of the Wild sanctuary<\/a> in Arizona earlier this month, and this just-released video shows them swimming in a spacious pool, lying on the grass near their dens, and napping under shady trees. It&#8217;s a world apart from their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-in-entertainment\/traveling-bear-shows-shameful-spectacles\/\">lives on the road<\/a>, when Cindi was repeatedly found pacing, a sign of psychological distress; Andy was kept on hard concrete floors, despite having painful arthritis; and Barney showed signs of an irritating skin condition for years.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video aligncenter is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"5 Bears Go From Abusive Show to Loving Home | PETA Animal Rescues\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/77Xm86r6w44?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Sammy and Tibor were carted around the country for years with Steeple&#8217;s Bears, forced to pose for photos and perform confusing and even painful tricks. But now, a new video shows them at the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas, where they&#8217;re finally able to nap in the woods and explore vast stretches of natural terrain.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video aligncenter is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Steeple\u2019s Bears Transfer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/faoftsE8UgU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>When Lily was brought to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, she was the most obese bear the staff had ever seen, having languished for 10 years in a barren, squalid, often waste-filled cage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/bear-goes-corn-crib-colorado-countryside\/\">at Maryland&#8217;s Deer Haven Mini Zoo before PETA was able to orchestrate her release<\/a>. This video catches up with her a year and a half later in her sanctuary home, where\u2014thanks to lots of exercise, healthy food, and the opportunity to hibernate\u2014she&#8217;s shed at least 200 pounds.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video aligncenter is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Lily the Bear&#039;s Incredible Transformation\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yUdY--RujmM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>These bears&#8217; astonishing transformations show just how much animals suffer when kept in captivity and denied everything that&#8217;s natural and important to them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-in-entertainment\/\">all for fleeting human amusement<\/a>. PETA is calling on caring people everywhere to take their stories to heart and never visit any attraction that uses bears or other animals for entertainment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help PETA Stand Up for Bears<\/h2>\n<p>Bears are highly intelligent, curious animals who have evolved to roam vast distances, yet in captivity, they&#8217;re typically confined to barren cages, often on concrete slabs that can cause arthritis, paw-pad issues, and pressure sores as well as severe psychological distress.
