{"id":826855,"date":"2016-09-30T13:02:57","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T17:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.peta.org\/?post_type=living&#038;p=826855"},"modified":"2025-02-18T15:05:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T23:05:19","slug":"discard-cans-bottles-kill-raccoon","status":"publish","type":"living","link":"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/lifestyle\/humane-home\/discard-cans-bottles-kill-raccoon\/","title":{"rendered":"How You Discard Cans and Bottles Could Kill a Raccoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Raccoon Appreciation Day should be every day of the year!<\/p>\n<p>These animals are undeniably resourceful and, as this raccoon mom goes to show, also clever, caring, and courageous:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video aligncenter is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Beautiful teamwork by a raccoon mother and her babies || ViralHog\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/exHJ_A0ED2o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>But there&#8217;s one big problem that raccoons (as well as other wildlife) face every day: TRASH.<\/p>\n<p>Animal control, the police, first responders, and good Samaritans have all had to come to the rescue of raccoons who have managed to squirm their way into a can or bottle, only to find that there isn&#8217;t a way to squirm back out.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Litter is a huge danger to animals such as raccoons.<\/h3>\n<p>This discarded mayonnaise jar became a death trap for a curious raccoon:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video aligncenter is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Princeton Police raccoon rescue\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ULiAN6_xwvA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>As if you needed another reason to ditch mayo! The jars, though, should still be washed out and properly disposed of once you&#8217;re done enjoying the vegan mayo.)<\/p>\n<p>And this metal can became firmly stuck on a raccoon&#8217;s head:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video aligncenter is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Couple rescues raccoon with his head stuck in a can.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xZuBt9ogwX4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>These two raccoons were lucky enough to have good Samaritans rescue them\u2014but for untold numbers of other animals, litter can be a death sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Just recently, viral photos of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/kitten-stuck-six-pack-ring-litter-dangerous\/\">kitten stuck in a plastic six-pack ring<\/a> showed the damaging effects that rubbish can have on animals.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But you can help!<\/h3>\n<p>Hungry animals desperate for even just a few crumbs often get their heads stuck in discarded cans, cups, and jars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Always rinse out containers (and place the lids back on them!) and crush metal cans before disposing of them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Securely cover garbage cans and recycle bins so that animals can&#8217;t get into them and become trapped inside. And don&#8217;t forget to keep an eye out for other people&#8217;s trash, too.
