On average,\u00a0<strong>24 horses die on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-in-entertainment\/horse-racing\/\">racetracks<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. every week<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.\u00a0&#8220;Horse racing doesn&#8217;t hurt the horses. They like it!&#8221;<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/dead-horse-gif.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/dead-horse-gif.gif\" alt=\"Dead Horse\"\/><\/a>\n<\/figure>\n<p>One study of injuries at racetracks concluded that\u00a0<strong>one horse in every 22 races sustained an injury that prevented him or her from finishing the race, <\/strong>while another estimated that<strong> three thoroughbreds die every day <\/strong>in North America because of terrible injuries sustained during races.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.\u00a0&#8220;We don&#8217;t push the horses past their limits.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Circled-Injection-Thumb.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-331780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Circled-Injection-Thumb-1024x535.png\" alt=\"Horse Racing Investigation Circled Injection Thumb\" width=\"576\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Circled-Injection-Thumb-1024x535.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Circled-Injection-Thumb-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Circled-Injection-Thumb-400x209.png 400w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Circled-Injection-Thumb.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Trainers and veterinarians keep injured horses working when they should be recovering\u2014giving them a variety of drugs<\/strong>\u00a0to mask pain, control inflammation, and enhance performance.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.\u00a0&#8220;They wouldn&#8217;t be doing it if it were illegal!&#8221;<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/illegal-horseracing-workers.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/illegal-horseracing-workers.gif\" alt=\"Undercover footage of Blasi\"\/><\/a>\n<\/figure>\n<p>An undercover PETA investigation found that thoroughbred trainer\u00a0<strong>Steve Asmussen was reportedly forcing employees from other countries to use false names and giving them fraudulent Social Security cards<\/strong>. Asmussen has had multiple drug infractions and has been suspended for violations.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.\u00a0&#8220;Horses get the best vet care possible.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/superglue-horseracing.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/superglue-horseracing.gif\" alt=\"Undercover Footage of Horse Trainers Discussing Superglue\"\/><\/a>\n<\/figure>\n<p>One horse, Nehro (who came in second in the 2011 Kentucky Derby), was forced to run with\u00a0<strong>chronically painful hooves that actually had holes in them\u2014and one hoof was patched with superglue<\/strong>. He died after becoming violently ill.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.\u00a0&#8220;They all get to retire and be happy when they&#8217;re done racing.&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video aligncenter is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"36 Hours to Hell\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/setii0DgRJk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Not true.\u00a0<strong>Many end up in slaughterhouses in Canada, Mexico, or Japan, where they are turned into dog food and glue<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>Their flesh is also exported to countries such as France and Japan, where it is considered a delicacy\u2014yuck!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.\u00a0&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing that I can do to stop this.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-dark-black-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/quick-ways-help-horses-2\/#action\">Take Action for Horses Now!<\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Not true. Soon after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/horse-racing-authorities-take-action\/\">PETA released our video documenting<\/a>\u00a0the misuse of drugs and other abuse at Churchill Downs and Saratoga Race Course by Steve Asmussen and other workers in his stable, state and federal authorities\u00a0launched formal investigations and Asmussen was removed from consideration for the racing Hall of Fame. Other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/owner-preakness-track-implements-reform-program\/\">significant reforms<\/a>\u00a0have also been announced.<\/p>\n<p>All that happened in a few short weeks!
