They languish in pain, ache with loneliness, and are deprived of everything that\u2019s natural and important to them. All they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them. A lack of environmental enrichment and the stress of their living situations cause some animals to develop neurotic behaviors, such as incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their own fur, and even biting themselves. After enduring lives of pain, loneliness, and terror, almost all of them will be killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Animal-Testing-Must-End-dog-rabbit-primate-rat-viv-collage.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Animal-Testing-Must-End-dog-rabbit-primate-rat-viv-collage-602x301.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2><strong>How PETA Helps Animals in Laboratories<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Since PETA\u2019s inception and the landmark&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/silver-spring-monkeys\/\">Silver Spring monkeys<\/a>&nbsp;case, we\u2019ve been at the forefront of exposing and ending experiments on animals. They also experience this fate in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/classroom-dissection\/\">medical training exercises<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/classroom-dissection\/\">classroom\u00a0biology experiments<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/animals-used-experimentation-factsheets\/dissection-lessons-cruelty\/\">dissection<\/a>\u00a0even though modern,\u00a0non-animal methods\u00a0have repeatedly been shown to have more educational value, save teachers time, and save schools money. Exact numbers aren\u2019t available, because mice, rats, birds, and cold-blooded animals\u2014who make up more than 99% of animals used in experiments\u2014aren\u2019t covered by even the minimal protections of the federal Animal Welfare Act and therefore go uncounted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of chemical and toxicity tests on animals include forcing mice and rats to inhale toxic fumes, force-feeding dogs chemicals, and applying corrosive chemicals into rabbits\u2019 sensitive eyes. Even if a product harms animals, it can still be marketed to consumers. Conversely, just because a product was shown to be safe in animals doesn\u2019t guarantee that it will be safe to use in humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much product testing conducted on animals today isn\u2019t required by law. In fact, a number of countries have implemented bans on the testing of certain types of consumer goods on animals, such as the cosmetics testing bans in India, Israel, New Zealand, Norway, and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, at universities and other institutions, experimenters inflict suffering on and kill animals for little more than curiosity\u2019s sake\u2014even though the vast majority of their findings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/animal-testing-bad-science\/\">fail to advance human health<\/a>. They <a href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/harvard-baby-monkeys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tear baby monkeys away from their mothers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jneurosci.org\/content\/jneuro\/8\/3\/874.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sew kittens\u2019 eyes shut<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/johns-hopkins-university-owl-experiments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mutilate owls\u2019 brains<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/sepsis-experiments-on-animals\/\">puncture the intestines of mice so that feces leak into their stomachs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/lsu-bird-experimenter-calls-this-violence-science\/\">terrorize songbirds with the sounds of predators<\/a>. Experiments on one species frequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/us-government-animal-testing-programs\/reproducibility-relevance\/\">fail to predict results<\/a> in another. Even the National Institutes of Health, the world\u2019s largest funder of biomedical research, <a href=\"https:\/\/ncats.nih.gov\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledges<\/a> that 95% of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technologically advanced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/alternatives-animal-testing\/\">non-animal research methods<\/a>\u2014such as those using human cells, computational models, or clinical studies\u2014can be used in place of animal testing. These methods are more humane, have the potential to be faster, and are more relevant to humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists in PETA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/science-advancement-outreach-division\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science Advancement &amp; Outreach division<\/a>, a part of the Laboratory Investigations Department, have developed a roadmap to phase out failing tests on animals with sophisticated, animal-free methods.
