{"id":125361,"date":"2011-08-08T13:23:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T17:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/silver-spring-monkeys\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T16:48:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T23:48:04","slug":"silver-spring-monkeys","status":"publish","type":"issue","link":"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/silver-spring-monkeys\/","title":{"rendered":"The Silver Spring Monkeys: The Case That Launched PETA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-beyondwords-player\"><div data-beyondwords-player=\"true\" contenteditable=\"false\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the summer of 1981,<\/strong> PETA&#8217;s founder, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.IngridNewkirk.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ingrid Newkirk<\/a>, leafed through the pages of the U.S. Department of Agriculture&#8217;s list of laboratories, picked the closest one, and asked her colleague, Alex, to see if he could get inside. He did and began working as a volunteer at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/videos\/silver-spring-monkeys\/\">Institute for Behavioral Research<\/a>&nbsp;(IBR). IBR was a federally funded laboratory in Silver Spring, Maryland, now closed down for reasons that will soon become apparent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What PETA Found Inside the Laboratory in Silver Spring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It was run out of a warehouse by psychologist and <strong>animal experimenter Edward Taub<em>, a man with no medical training<\/em><\/strong>. There, we found <strong>17 monkeys living in tiny rusty wire cages caked with years of accumulated feces in a dungeon<\/strong>-like room. There was <em>no veterinarian<\/em> to tend to their serious wounds, and they had a lot of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>WATCH:<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Silver Spring Monkeys\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8dM8ZItgpsk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taub&#8217;s Experiments on the Silver Spring Monkeys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taub, who also had no veterinary training, nevertheless <strong>subjected the monkeys to surgeries in which he <em>severed their spinal nerves<\/em><\/strong>, rendering one or more of their limbs useless. By means of <strong>electric shock, food deprivation, and other cruel methods, <\/strong>he forced them to try to regain the use of their impaired limbs to pick up raisins from a tray\u2014or else go without food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one experiment, <strong>monkeys were shut inside a converted refrigerator and repeatedly electro-shocked<\/strong> until they finally used their disabled arm, if they could. The <strong>inside of the refrigerator was covered with <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-bright-red-color\">blood<\/mark><\/strong>.
