In nature, they can fly 55 miles an hour, run 35 miles an hour, and live up to 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-75\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-petablue-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/cool-things-you-never-knew-turkeys\/\" style=\"box-shadow:var(--wp--preset--shadow--crisp)\">16 Facts About Turkeys <em>\u2192<\/em><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But the story is very different for turkeys on factory farms: <strong>They\u2019ll be killed when they\u2019re only 3 to 5 months old<\/strong> and, during their short lives, will be denied even the simplest pleasures, such as running, building nests, and raising their young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Butterball House of Horrors\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/490290471?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like chickens, the estimated 245 million turkeys raised and killed for their flesh every year in the U.S. <strong><em>have no federal legal protection<\/em><\/strong>. More than 46 million of them are killed each year at Thanksgiving alone, and more than 22 million die at Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-75\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-bright-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/turkeys-thanksgiving-reality\/\" style=\"box-shadow:var(--wp--preset--shadow--crisp)\">Video Exposes Reality of So-Called &#8216;Happy&#8217; or &#8216;Heritage&#8217; Turkeys <em>\u2192<\/em><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Before ending up as holiday centerpieces, these gentle, intelligent birds spend their short lives on factory farms, where <strong>thousands of them are packed into dark sheds<\/strong> with no more than 3.5 square feet of space per bird. They\u2019re genetically bred to grow as quickly as possible, and they often <strong>become crippled under their own weight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep the crowded birds from scratching and pecking each other to death,<strong> workers cut off portions of their toes and upper beaks with hot blades and de-snood the males<\/strong>. (The snood is the flap of skin that runs from the beak to the chest.) No pain relievers are used during any of these procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-75\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-bright-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/investigations.peta.org\/turkey-abuse-humane-farms\/\" style=\"box-shadow:var(--wp--preset--shadow--crisp)\">PETA Investigation: Turkeys Stomped on and Punched at &#8216;Humane&#8217; Farms <em>\u2192<\/em><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>PETA investigations have documented that <strong>workers punched and stomped on live turkeys and slammed them against walls<\/strong>. At one facility, a farm manager <strong>bludgeoned young birds with what he called his \u201ckilling stick.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-75\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-bright-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/support.peta.org\/page\/1867\/peti\/1?locale=en-US\" style=\"box-shadow:var(--wp--preset--shadow--crisp)\">Investigation Reveals Horrific Cruelty to Turkeys <em>\u2192<\/em><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkeys <strong>don\u2019t have the opportunity to breathe fresh air<\/strong> or feel the sun on their backs until they\u2019re shoved onto trucks bound for slaughter. They\u2019re <strong>transported for hours without food or water<\/strong> through all weather extremes\u2014and many may die on this nightmarish journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the slaughterhouse, the survivors are<strong> hung upside down by their weak and crippled legs<\/strong> before their heads are <strong>dragged through an electrified \u201cstunning tank,\u201d<\/strong> which immobilizes but doesn\u2019t kill them. Many dodge the tank and are still completely <strong>conscious when their throats are slit<\/strong>. If the blade fails to cut the birds\u2019 throats properly, <strong>they\u2019re scalded alive<\/strong> in the tank of boiling water that\u2019s used for feather removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div
