Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Fix leaky faucets. While we can all cut down our water use with these simple habits, our biggest water footprint doesn\u2019t happen in our bathrooms. <strong>It happens at mealtime.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Your Water Use (in Almonds)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rGDERE43iTk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Major Culprit Behind the Water Crisis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s something the meat, egg, and dairy industries don\u2019t want you to know: Animal agriculture is one of the biggest consumers of water on the planet. <\/strong>In the U.S. alone, an estimated 55 percent of the freshwater supply goes to raising animals for food. That\u2019s because vast amounts of water are used to grow crops to feed animals on farms and to clean filthy farms and slaughterhouses. <strong>Here are some shocking stats:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each day, humans worldwide drink an estimated 5.2 billion gallons of water. Cows drink roughly eight and a half times that amount in a day\u201445 billion gallons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Just one beef burger can use about 625 gallons of water. <\/strong>That\u2019s roughly the equivalent of 40 showers. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Just one slice of bacon can require about 45 gallons of water. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>One pound of cheese uses about 900 gallons of water. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A carton of eggs uses about 636 gallons of water.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A gallon of milk stolen from mother cows requires about 1,000 gallons of water.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_3972.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_3972-602x343.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-843480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_3972-602x343.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_3972-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_3972-768x438.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_3972-400x228.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_3972.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the cruel commercial fishing industry is destroying our oceans\u2019 delicate ecosystems. Coastal fish farms release feces, antibiotics, parasites, and non-native species into sensitive marine ecosystems, further damaging ocean habitats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On the other hand, growing vegetables for human consumption uses far less water.<\/strong> For example, it takes about <strong>25 gallons of water to grow a pound of wheat<\/strong>, and studies estimate that <strong>veggie burgers require more than 75% less water than beef burgers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Want to Know How to Save H20?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The single biggest action you can take to preserve water is to go vegan.<\/strong> Each person who goes vegan can save approximately 219,000 gallons of water\u2014and 200 animals\u2014every year.
