With growing awareness of how much birds suffer in the pet trade, cities across the country are stepping up to stop the cruelty. As of September 2025, these communities have passed bans on the retail sale of birds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>West Hollywood, CA&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arlington, MA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beverley, MA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brookline, MA&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cambridge, MA&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ann Arbor, MI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hazel Park, MI&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ferndale, MI&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easton, PA&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Birds Are Not \u2018Pets\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When free, birds fly miles every day alongside their friends and families, communicating through complex songs and calls. Some bird species mate for life and share parenting duties. The pet trade robs them of everything that is important to them. Birds can be a bit like human toddlers, except they stay curious, noisy, and needy for <em>decades<\/em>\u2014sometimes 15, 50, or even up to 75 years. Caged birds can be extremely loud, bite hard, and need constant attention, lots of space, and plenty of enrichment\u2014requirements that most families aren\u2019t prepared to provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Countless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/birds-for-sale-near-me-pet-bird-facts-problems\/\">\u201cpet\u201d birds<\/a> spend their entire lives trapped inside a cage in the corner of a living room, basement, or garage, where they\u2019re driven to despair by boredom and isolation. They may scream, pluck out their feathers, mutilate their skin, or rock and pace endlessly. Some even collapse from anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animal-companion-issues\/cruel-practices\/caging-birds\/\">learn more about how &#8220;pet&#8221; birds suffer<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Let Compassion Soar: Take Action for Birds!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most families simply don\u2019t have the time, patience, or resources to welcome a bird into their home. But if you do, and you\u2019re <em>truly<\/em> committed to making this serious decision, look into adopting one from a reputable shelter\u2014<strong><em>never<\/em> buy an animal from a breeder or pet store.<\/strong> But do your homework first: Birds have complex dietary, behavioral, and social needs, and caring for them is a lifelong, time-consuming, and expensive commitment that requires patience, research, and daily dedication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please tell Petco to stop selling birds, reptiles, and other animals:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"pma-content-shortcode pma-locale-en\" id='pma-root-node'>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"row pma-text-center\" id='pma-response-error'><\/div>\n\t<form action=\"#\" name=\"PE ETT ACOM 2018-10-17 Betta Fish Are Suffering by the Millions. Birds, reptiles, small mammals, and fish have special needs that impulse and unprepared buyers often fail to meet. \n\nAnimals are not inanimate merchandise\u2014they are living, feeling beings who are often deprived of basic necessities or any opportunity to exhibit natural behavior when they\u2019re confined to small tanks or cramped cages. \n\nAdoption groups for birds, small mammals, and other exotic animals are struggling to deal with the high volume of discarded and unwanted animals who are in need of placement.\n\nThere is absolutely no excuse for Petco to sell animals.
