{"id":1155492,"date":"2026-02-09T12:23:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T20:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/?p=1155492"},"modified":"2026-02-27T06:40:58","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:40:58","slug":"oregon-primate-center-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/oregon-primate-center-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon Primate Lab to Explore Becoming Sanctuary; PETA Praises OHSU Board"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a colossal win for monkeys and science, the Oregon Health &amp; Science University (OHSU) board of directors voted unanimously to pass a resolution today authorizing negotiations with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) <strong>to end experiments on monkeys and transition the federally funded Oregon National Primate Center to a sanctuary for the more than 5,000 monkeys it now holds.<\/strong> This follows sustained pressure from PETA, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), Oregon legislators, Governor Tina Kotek, and tens of thousands of Oregonians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/rhesus-macaques-family.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/rhesus-macaques-family-602x401.jpg\" alt=\"Rhesus macaque family grooming and feeding baby\" class=\"wp-image-1019078\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/rhesus-macaques-family-602x401.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/rhesus-macaques-family-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/rhesus-macaques-family-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/rhesus-macaques-family.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During these discussions, the primate center will stop breeding monkeys as OHSU works with NIH to devise a plan to end the torment and killing of 1,200 monkeys a year in pointless tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PETA is grateful to Oregon Health and Science University President Shereef Elnahal, the university board of directors, Governor Kotek, Oregon state legislators, the National Institutes of Health, and all of you, our supporters, for bringing about this monumental victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement follows months of ramped-up pressure from PETA and Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), and years of campaigning by PETA. Recently,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Oregon legislature passed a bill mandating closure of the facility if NIH funding dropped by 25 percent or if any state funding is used by the center. Dozens of PETA supporters spoke at a legislative hearing and thousands contacted their state legislators and the governor, who subsequently called for closure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PETA formally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/oha\/HPA\/HP\/HCMOPageDocs\/039-PETA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requested<\/a> that the Oregon Health Authority condition a merger between the university and Legacy Health on the closure of the primate center and launched an onslaught of social media ads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PCRM sponsored hundreds of TV and radio ads using video and audio from PETA\u2019s two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YU-0SNemRnA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">undercover investigations<\/a> into the primate center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PETA brought to Portland its art installation \u201cHow the Other Half Lives,\u201d a giant pair of binoculars that shows video of monkeys circling their tiny cages inside laboratories juxtaposed with troops of monkeys living happily in their natural forest homes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PETA supporters projected a giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/news-releases\/petas-neon-highway-overpass-message-close-the-ohsu-primate-laboratory\/\">banner<\/a> made of lights over the busy I-5 highway demanding, \u201cCLOSE OHSU MONKEY LAB.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the last several months, PETA supporters have greeted NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya at his public appearances with signs saying, \u201cNIH, Close the Monkey Labs.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OHSU-pia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OHSU-pia-602x293.jpg\" alt=\"Light boards spelling &quot;Close OHSU Monkey Lab&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-1152763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OHSU-pia-602x293.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OHSU-pia-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OHSU-pia-768x374.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OHSU-pia-750x365.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OHSU-pia.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PETA on the Vanguard<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement ends 60 years of wasteful tests in which experimenters forcefully pumped nicotine into monkeys, fed pregnant monkeys high-fat diets before killing their infants, repeatedly electro-ejaculated male monkeys, addicted monkeys to alcohol, and subjected monkeys to full-body irradiation, among numerous other cruelties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 20 years, PETA has been the tip of the spear lodged in the ribcage of the primate center, exposing the violence against monkeys. We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/news-releases\/peta-prevails-in-lawsuit-ohsu-must-turn-over-videos-of-monkey-experiments\/\">successfully sued<\/a> the university to obtain video of experiments in which pregnant monkeys were fed junk food and their babies were deliberately intimidated in an \u201cintruder test.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PETA conducted two <a href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/onprc\/\">undercover investigations<\/a> of the primate center, exposing violations and terrified monkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primate center has violated the federal Animal Welfare Act dozens of times. In April, PETA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/news-releases\/peta-files-federal-complaint-on-death-of-monkey-denied-veterinary-care-at-ohsu-primate-center\/\">urged<\/a> the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to investigate multiple violations at the university, including a Japanese macaque who was denied veterinary care after developing sepsis and died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Winds of Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition is representative of the sea change against animal experimentation in biomedical research, a heartening trend PETA has long advocated. In April, NIH announced a shift in funding away from experiments on animals toward non-animal research methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-peta wp-block-embed-peta\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"lfKmeWP5aV\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/the-nih-just-declared-a-scientific-revolution-and-it-could-save-millions-of-lives\/\">NIH Just Declared a Scientific Revolution!
