Coco, the new dog, was chained outside with a small plastic doghouse for shelter. The 6-month-old terrier\u2019s owner \u201cswears that Coco wants to be [outside],\u201d Alex noted. Here, she snuggles up to PETA Vice President of Community Animal Project (CAP) Emily Allen during a spring 2024 visit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex, Emily, and every other CAP member who visited Coco begged her owner for the chance to find the playful pup a loving home indoors, but for a little more than a year, these pleas were denied. So fieldworkers did <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.peta.org\/petas-rescue-team\/\">what they always do<\/a>: They improved sweet Coco\u2019s life in every way possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure href=\"https:\/\/support.peta.org\/page\/19558\/action\/1?locale=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more durable shelter<\/a>, CAP swapped Coco\u2019s chain for a lightweight tie-out and\u2014after her owner complained that the lively lady kept knocking her water dish over\u2014secured a water bucket to her doghouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingthechainfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breaking the chain<\/a> <\/em>in favor of a tie-out.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, PETA convinced Coco\u2019s owner that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animal-companion-issues\/overpopulation\/spay-neuter\/\">a spayed dog is a healthier dog<\/a>\u2014as spaying eliminates the stress and discomfort of heat periods, nixes the risk of uterine cancer, and greatly reduces the possibility of mammary cancer\u2014and scooped the terrier for a free sterilization appointment back in Virginia. When fieldworkers brought the newly spayed girl back, though, Coco\u2019s owner refused to let her recover from surgery indoors. Safe and sound indoors, Nina is learning to snuggle, play, snooze, zoom, hang with her canine foster siblings, only potty outside, and more!
