And for Copper\u2014a beagle who was chained outside 24\/7 near Galax, Virginia, with no shelter and, judging by his protruding rib and hip bones, nearly no food\u2014that village consisted of caring Twin County Humane Society (TCHS) staffers, a remarkably compassionate local animal control officer, and two of my fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.peta.org\/petas-rescue-team\/\">PETA fieldworkers<\/a>. And while my husband, Dan, and I have rounded out Copper\u2019s crew, it all <em>started<\/em> with one good Samaritan: a mystery caller I will forever think of as my sweet beagle\u2019s Secret Santa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\"><div class=\"widescreen-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Starving Dog&#039;s Life Forever Changed By a Single Call From a Secret Santa\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9KOyj3E4rdg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If the \u201cbefore\u201d footage above makes your blood boil, you\u2019re not alone. My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/about-peta\/learn-about-peta\/helping-animals-in-hampton-roads\/community-animal-project\/\">Community Animal Project<\/a> coworkers, Adam and Jenny\u2014who were in <a href=\"https:\/\/inthefield.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/CAP-Galax-Insert-APR-JUN2024_FIN300.pdf\">Galax as part of a PETA event<\/a> that saw 229 cats and dogs sterilized for free within two days\u2014were asked by the TCHS, which partnered with PETA to host the spay-a-thon, to help with a welfare check for a dog described by an anonymous caller as very thin. A local animal control officer joined Adam and Jenny at the property after they discovered Copper, a senior beagle mix who had no doghouse or other shelter and whose chain allowed only 4 feet of movement. Despite this neglect, his alarming thinness, and his lack of any water to drink, from the moment my coworkers met him, Copper was amazingly sweet-natured. And despite who knows how many years of being chained up outside, the silver-muzzled sweetheart was a quick potty-training study, too. Importantly, Jenny also reported that the fetching fella enjoys gazing out a window as well as gazing at himself in mirrors. (Did Copper mention yet that he\u2019s handsome?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With his bodyweight nearly doubled and his spirit fully renewed, I was tasked with writing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/category\/miscellaneous-parent\/adoptable\/\">a blog post<\/a> that would help roughly 9-year-old Copper fill one very important village vacancy: guardian.
