However, shoppers often don\u2019t apply the same kind of thought when at the grocery store. Unfortunately, much like a suspicious call offering a deal that\u2019s too good to be true, \u201chumane\u201d and \u201csustainable\u201d labels on animal-derived foods are deceptive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Humane-Meat-Image-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Humane-Meat-Image-1-602x602.jpg\" alt=\"A cartoon of a farmer with a bloody knife and dying, smiling animals\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of selling delicious <strong>vegan<\/strong> foods that are <em>truly<\/em> humane, many companies simply slap misleading labels touting compassion on the same types of cruelly sourced products that they\u2019ve sold for decades. This is known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/do-not-be-fooled-by-humane-washing\/?v2=1\">humane-washing<\/a>,\u201d and it\u2019s a marketing ploy that makes consumers believe that they\u2019re making kind choices when they\u2019re actually not. Here, we\u2019ll break down what these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUGuckEFZWA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deceptive labels<\/a> really mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Humane-Washed-Labels.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Humane-Washed-Labels-602x602.jpg\" alt=\"Common &quot;humane washed&quot; labels are displayed: Grass-Fed, Cage Free, No Antibiotics, No Hormones, Farm-Raised, Wild Caught\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Grass-Fed\u2019 Cows <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The U.S. Department of Agriculture doesn\u2019t verify the accuracy of producers\u2019 claims, so it\u2019s nearly impossible to know what the cows really ate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGrass-fed\u201d cows are still subjected to mutilations without painkillers\u2014hot irons are pressed into their skin, and their sensitive horns are burned off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Farmers and ranchers may clear vast acres of land filled with natural plant life in order to graze cows, which kills wildlife and causes erosion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/grass-fed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/grass-fed-602x602.jpg\" alt=\"Cow with ear-tag and blood dripping from head wound\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Cage-Free\u2019 Chickens and Eggs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hens used in the egg industry live in dark, severely crowded warehouses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tips of chicks\u2019 beaks are commonly burned off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up to 86% of hens used in cage-free egg production have broken bones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All male chicks are killed\u2014often ground up or thrown into the trash to suffocate\u2014because they\u2019re considered useless by the egg industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Cage-Free.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Cage-Free-602x602.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;cage free&quot; chickens live in dark, crowded warehouses\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if Animals Raised With \u2018No Antibiotics\u2019 Get Sick? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Producers can use this label as long as they provide \u201csufficient evidence\u201d that the animals were raised without antibiotics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More animals can suffer and die because farmers don\u2019t treat them when they get infections, in order to keep the deceptive label.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/No-antibiotics.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/No-antibiotics-602x602.jpg\" alt=\"A pig with a large, tumor-like lump lays on the floor and is covered in black dirt.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which Animals on Farms Are Raised With \u2018No Hormones\u2019?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This label applies only to the flesh and milk of cows. It\u2019s illegal to give hormones to chickens, pigs, and turkeys, so any company advertising hormone-free products from these animals isn\u2019t doing any extra work.
